As science leads the charge to getting us back to 'normality', maybe it's time to ask what our new normal could be?
The last year has highlighted vast socio-economic inequalities globally and locally. 'Fair trade' is central to our business here at Just Trade; fair trade is a pioneering example of how international trade can and should be achieved, but these principles also need to be applied to us locally.
Principle 4 of the WFTO's 10 Principles of Fair Trade states, 'A Fair Wage is an equitable, freely negotiated and mutually agreed wage, and presumes the payment of at least a Local Living Wage.'
The Living Wage Foundation is an independent movement of businesses that campaign to persuade employers to pay a living wage here in the UK, ensuring employees earn a wage that meets the costs of living, not just the government minimum.
Fair trade and paying a living wage goes hand in hand. Paying a living wage is a long term and important investment into people, whether that be in South America, India, Vietnam or right here in the UK. We are incredibly proud to be an accredited Living Wage Employer.
